CIRRHOSIS A LIVER DISEASE:CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS

What Is Cirrhosis?

Cirrhosis is a liver disease that leads to disfiguration of the normal structure of the liver and hampers the functioning of the liver.In cirrhosis, damaged and scarred tissues replace the normal and healthy cells of the liver.Due to damaged cells, the liver becomes lumpy and hard and after some sometimes it starts to fail.There are many factors that cause cirrhosis including alcohol, fat, and certain medications, viruses, toxic metals and autoimmune liver disease in which the body's immune system attacks the liver.


What Causes Cirrhosis?

The most common causes of cirrhosis are-

1.Excess consumption of alcohol-

2.Infection with hepatitis B or C

3.Being overweight

4.Diabetes

5.High Cholesterol

6.High Blood Pressure

7.Certain medication

8.Damage to bile duct

9.Advanced age can also be a risk factor

10.Hemochromatosis (an iron disorder or iron overload)


These have some early stage symptoms of liver cirrhosis-

1.Jaundice(due to accumulation of bilirubin in the blood)

2.Fatigue

3.Loss of appetite

4.Itching

5.Dark stool

6.Weight loss

7.Fluid retention in abdomen and legs

8.Weakness

9.Nausea

10.Vomiting of blood


How can it be diagnosed?

1.Endoscopy

2.Ultrasound of the liver

3.MRI of the abdomen

4.CT scan of the abdomen

5.Liver biopsy



Can cirrhosis of liver be treated?

No, a damaged liver can not be treated completely, but the intensity of the disease can be reduced by certain medication.the only solution to this disease is the liver transplant.


What is the complication associated with it?

1.Bleeding

2.Kidney failure

3.Enlarged spleen

4.Fluid retention in abdomen and leg


Here are some ways to reduce your chances of having cirrhosis:

1.Stick to your treatments.

2.Don’t drink alcohol

3.Do not eat tobacco

4.Don’t smoke.

5.Keep a healthy weight

6.Eat a low-fat diet.
