Know, Why Too Much Salt Is Bad For Your Health?

Less salt means lack of taste. Isn't it? And, consuming too much salt unfortunately can kill you? Yes, you read it right; consuming salt more than recommended limit can cause serious threat to your health. Though our body needs some amount of salt for proper functioning of our muscles and nerves.  It is needed by our body to maintain proper fluid balance. It also helps manage blood pressure and blood volume. But consuming too much salt or more than recommended limit especially if you are older than 45, can give you high blood pressure, make you diabetic, damage your bones, make you look older, cause obesity and stroke, and more worsely put you at risk of chronic kidney and cardiovascular diseases.

According to a survey it has been found out that people who had consumed salt more than recommended limit were more likely to have a serious event such as heart attack, stroke or kidney disease than those whose salt intake was less. As per the World Health Organization statistics, it has been stated that salt consumption attributes for more than 1.5 million heart-related deaths every year across the globe. 
Unfortunately and unknowingly we often include too much salt in our diet or consume foods without looking at the nutrition facts labels to know the sodium content. Here is the list why consuming too much salt is actually bad for your health. 

1)Increases Blood Pressure Level- Consuming too much salt can make your blood turn into water and increase the blood volume. Increased blood volume causes the blood vessels and heart to work harder as they have to pump more blood. With the passage of time, the blood vessels start getting stiff which in result leads to hypertension. Make sure you consume salt in recommended limit to reduce your risk of heart diseases and high blood pressure exponentially.

2)Increases your risk of stroke- Salt is one of the biggest culprits for stroke. Consuming too much salt can increase the blood pressure to damaging level which leads to stroke or other cardiovascular ailments. Curbing down you sodium intake can greatly save you from these life threatening conditions.

3)Can Cause Stomach Cancer- High salt consumption can also be linked to stomach cancer. Too much salt can highly damage the lining of the stomach. The damage can infect the stomach and may cause stomach cancer.

4)Makes bone brittle- Salt consumption out of the recommended limit destroys the calcium present in the bones. It makes your bone weak, fragile and brittle which in result leads to osteoporosis. So if you have been having too much sodium throughout your life, your likelihood of getting bone problem might increase. 

5)Causes Chronic Kidney Diseases- Just like your liver, heart and other organs, your kidneys work hard to flush out toxins from the body. When the amount of sodium increases, the kidney works overtime to flush out the toxins. Over time, your kidney becomes weak and incapable of performing well. Sometimes it starts building up high amount of calcium and may cause kidney stone. It may also lead to kidney failure in extreme condition.

6)Causes Water Retention (Edema) - Too much salt consumption can cause fluid buildup in feet, hands and other parts of the body. Water retention can sometimes be harmless but can deadly on other times and may cause chronic kidney failure.

According to American Heart Association it is recommended to have 2,300 milligrams (mgs) per day to balance your blood pressure and improve organ’s health. So make sure you start consuming salt in recommended limit to prevent severe damage.
